Films to Get You In The Mood For Adventure

Films to get you in the mood for adventure

While we are the biggest advocates of getting outdoors and experiencing the wild (in comfort of course!) with most of the UK experiencing tighter socialising restrictions we also know you’re spending more time than ever on the sofa. But don’t let that stop you looking forward to new adventures and new challenges. Grab the popcorn and settle in to a movie marathon made for adventure seekers, or simply those wanting to look ahead to an outdoorsy holiday. Here’s our top adventure-movie picks:

1. Moonrise Kingdom

Taking older kids camping this year or want to convince them that buying a Nomad Trailer is a great idea? This film is just the ticket! Told in true Wes Anderson style, “Sam, a 12-year-old orphan, falls in love with Suzy and the two run away to a secluded cove on an island, prompting the entire town to begin a search.”  By the end of the film you’ll be creating your own maps and ordering a compass – this film makes wild camping very cool.

Available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.

2. Wild

“Cheryl Strayed (played by Reese Witherspoon) makes a decision to halt her downward spiral and put her life back together again. With no outdoors experience, a heavy backpack and little else to go on but her own will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail — one of the country’s longest and toughest through-trails.” Based on a true story this heart-warming film shows just what an impact getting outdoors can have on a person.

Available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.

3. Brave

The Disney-Pixar film is perfect if you have younger kids. With scenes exploring woods and featuring the most beautiful landscapes of Scotland it will get the whole family in the mood for adventure and show little girls that they too can go wild! “Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, this movie features Princess Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of Queen Elinor. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right.”

Watch on Disney+ or rent/buy on Amazon Prime Video.

4. Downhill

“Gordon is determined that he and best friend Keith will conquer Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire. But when a stray conversation determines that old school friends Steve and Julian join them on the trip, their best-laid plans reveal multiple mid-life crises.”

If you’re in need of something to inspire you to put your walking boots on and plan a trip of a lifetime then Downhill is it! This just might make you question who you take with you…we challenge you not to plan a holiday to the Lake District after seeing the scenery in this laugh out loud comedy!

Buy it on Amazon, itunes, Blinkbox and Virgin Media.

5. Free Solo

With jaw-dropping landscapes and jaw-dropping adventure, Free Solo is a documentary that profiles rock climber Alex Honnold on his quest to perform a free solo climb of El Capitan in June 2017, described by The New York Times as something that “should be celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind ever”. It’s nail-biting stuff but you’ll definitely want to set yourself some new outdoor challenges in 2021!

Watch on Disney+ or Hulu and buy across all video streaming platforms.

6. Local Hero

Alright, this one isn’t about adventure, but it is the one that always makes us pine for the wilds of Scotland, with beautiful beach scenes and jaw-dropping distant mountain backdrops.  This is the quintessential quirky British (actually just Scottish) comedy about an oil tycoon sent to ‘sensitively’ negotiate the purchase of a coastal village to convert into the world’s biggest oil refinery.  Poignant, nostalgic, romantic, enigmatic wistful – all those things that makes us want to pull a Nomad Trail onto a beach, light a fire, pour a single malt and watch a sunset while playing Mark Knopflers’ classic soundtrack.
